For our first Underrated Athlete Story, there was no better choice than the historic 2025 season of Trey Yesavage.

At Xcelsior, we value the journey of working relentlessly, overcoming adversity, and rising beyond expectations. Trey Yesavage embodied every part of this mindset throughout his incredible 2025-26 season.

He began 2025 in Low-A with the Dunedin Blue Jays, the lowest level of affiliated professional baseball in the United States. For many players, the dream of reaching the MLB from that position seems nearly impossible. For Yesavage, however, adversity became an opportunity for growth.

Over the course of a single season, he climbed through every level of professional baseball: High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A, before ultimately reaching the Toronto Blue Jays in time for the playoffs.

What followed was one of the most unique and exciting performances in baseball. Yesavage led his team on a historic run to the MLB Final where the Blue Jays fell just short of the Pennant Trophy. During this time, he had 39 strikeouts across 27.2 innings which set multiple rookie postseason records.

Yesavage immediately became a player people couldn’t stop talking about because of his unconventional pitching style. While I’m far from a baseball expert, even analysts were amazed by how vertically unique his release point was compared to what hitters were used to seeing. What stood out most to me, though, wasn’t just the mechanics, it was his ability to continue progressing despite the adversity placed in front of him.

The very thing that may have once been viewed as a flaw — his uniqueness — became the reason he stood out when the pressure was highest.

That’s what staying underrated is all about.

Stay Underrated
